Symbiotic relationships among animals are marvelous to read and learn about. This book has many situations to talk about in addition to more interesting information about how animals protect themselves. The high interest content in this book serves an audience inclusive of strong readers in second grade through junior high.
Bug Book: Starting With Nature Series, (1999) Pamela Hickman, Illus. by Heather Collins. Kids Can Press, ISBN 1-55074-475-5. This is a nice series filled with facts, interesting anecdotes, experiments and activities for children that require minimal help from adults.
Dinosaurs to Dodos: An Encyclopedia of Extinct Animals, (1999) Don Lessem, Illus. by Jan Sovak. Scholastic, ISBN 0-590-31684-2. This type of information books never lose their popularity among children. This book uses very attractive illustrations combined with briefs on the extinct animals from sea life to land animals.
Dolphins: What They Can Teach Us, (1999) Mary M. Cerullo, Photos by Jeffrey L. Rotman. Dutton, ISBN 0-525-65263-9. Dolphins have held the attention of marine biologists, other scientists and the public for some time. They have many unique features that have proven helpful to our understanding of marine life. This nonfiction book geared for third through junior high aged students provides an insightful look at these magnificent mammals.
Exploding Ants: Amazing Facts About How Animals Adapt, (1999) Joanne Settel, Ph.D. Atheneum, ISBN 0-689-81739-8. Wow! An excellent high interest book with 1-2 page facts on a variety of animals. Close-up photos support the text. This is the kind of book you can use as a read aloud to entice children into reading more about each of these unusual animals. Another nice feature is the author is a female scientist.
National Audubon Society: First Field Guide Series published by Scholastic are extraordinary outdoor reference guides! Books released this year featuring Reptiles, Amphibians, and Night Sky; join those released in 1998 about Wildflowers, Birds, Insects, Trees, Weather, and Mammals.
Pick a Pet, (1999) Shelley Rotner and Cheo García. Orchard Books, ISBN 0-531-30147-8. This is a simple and charming photo picture book that takes us on a child's struggle with choosing the right pet for herself.

This new Doodlezoo series for young audiences features facts, photos, maps, and cartoonish illustrations with captions. The captions add a bit of humor to the nonfiction story format. Also in the series is Cat Nap: A Wild Romp With the Big Cats. For toddlers, Chronicle has produced some great nonfiction board books with a similar style that includes: Those That Float Those That Don't; This and That: A Book of Opposites; Shake, Rattle and Roll: An Action-Packed Verb Book; and Count Us In : A 1 to 10 Book.
South American Animals, (1999) Caroline Arnold. Morrow, ISBN 0-688-15564-2. Caroline Arnold's photography is fantastic. Her brief descriptive text makes this an easy read for reluctant older readers. The book can easily be shared with primary audiences too.
