They come in sets of four and are leveled ranging from preschool through grade four with the vocabulary and story passages increasing with the ascending levels.
Harry's Got a Girlfriend! (1999) Ulli Schubert, Illus. by Wolfgang Slawski. North-South Books, ISBN 0-7358-1105-9. This is a timely book. Dealing with girlfriends and boyfriends is a subject that young children often have to deal with on their own. This story for primary audiences, may be helpful and a useful tool for discussing the misunderstood and hurt feelings.

Jumping into Nothing, (1999) Gina Willner-Pardo, Illus. by Heidi Chang. Clarion Books, ISBN 0-395-84130-5. Sophie's afraid of jumping off the high dive. She learns that "sometimes you have to know when it's time to do something, and when it's time to wait. And when it's something you shouldn't do at all." This is a wise and funny book for young readers.
Mary and the Mystery Dog, (1999) Wolfram Hänel, Illus. by Kirsten Höcker. North-South Books, ISBN 0-738-1043-5. Mary and her parents are spending a week at the beach. Mary befriends a stray dog and is concerned for his well being until the owner shows up. Another book also by Hänel, Rescue at Sea, is another wonderful dog story that would make a nice companion read for beginning chapter book readers.
Poppleton in Fall, (1999) Cynthia Rylant, Illustrated by Mark Teague. Blue Sky/Scholastic, ISBN 0-590-84789-9. Three stories featuring Poppleton the pig are full of Rylant's wisdom and gentle tongue in cheek humor.
