Resturcture the state chapter to meet the changing needs of Idaho Educators

1) Change summer leadership to regioan meeting to reach more members.

2) Eliminate the publication of Portals.

3) Create a newsletter that will include current events in reading.

4) Change the membership strute, members will renew annually.

5) Professional development focus has changed to informing educators about current issues in reading.

Promote and support the professionalism of teachers.

1) Disseminate information about current research. a. Put IRA's postition papers in our newsletter.

2) Ask teachers to engage professionally. a. Inform them of current publications in the area of reading at our fall regional meetings.

3) Give each chapter president or regioanl representative a scholarchip to attend the local fall conference.

1) President and Vice Presidnet elect will attend the 2000 IRA for Carol Santa's kick off presentation of "School as Learning Community" (Teacher as Researcher).

2) Provide chapters and regions with start-up grants for Teacher as researcher groups.

3) Promote "Exemplary Reading Award" in the newsletter.

 

Advocate significant literacy issues in Idaho.

1) Inform and support teachers as they implement the 1999 literacy laws.

a) Inform them of the laws and their impact on teachers nad teaching at the fall regional meetings.

b) Provide updats about the legislation in the newsletter.

2) Host a fall state reading conference and invite all members.

a) Feature Marilyn Howard, State Superintendent of Public Schools.

b) Have a session on the current reading legislation.

c) Have one of the "chat room" sessions on the current legislation.

1) Encourage leaders/members to have personal contact with legislators.

2) Create legislative liasons with every region or local chapter.

3) Create information legislative packets.

4) Send Vice President elect to conference in Washington.

Increase ICIRA's visibility Statewide.

1) Contact every principal and invite them to bring a teacher(s) and attend the fall regional meeting.

2) Create a bumper sticker, magnet, and note cards with the logo " We teach (picture of to stick figures in the state of Idaho) to read.

3) Create a website

4) Mail and informative newsletter quarterly.

Build and maintain partnerships with other organizations which share an interest in the promotion of literacy.

1) Explore partnerships for the year 2000 with the following organizations

a) PTA

b) NCTE

c) ALA

d) ASIA

e) SIC

f) Early Childhood

2) Continue to work closely with the State Department of Idaho
